9. SLICE OF HUMAN MAMMARY GLAND

LEGEND

Slide 9. This is a portion of a breast slice measuring approximately 3 x 4 cm in area by 2 mm thick. Visible are: subcutaneous fat (SC), mammary layer (M), retromammary fat (RM), and a small portion of pectoralis major (PM). The mammary layer in this instance contains large lobules of fat (F). Note the ducts and lobules (blue) in the mammary layer. In humans the mammary ducts and lobules occupy the connective tissue bands, not the fat. However, ducts and lobules of mouse mammary gland are embedded in fat, not in dense connective tissue. Hematoxylin stain.
