8. SLICE OF HUMAN MAMMARY GLAND

LEGEND
Slide 8. This is a complete parasaggital slice of a human mammary gland. The slice measures approximately 18 cm x 7 cm x 2 mm thick, and is one of approximately 50 slices from a whole breast. Four layers are identified: skin (SK), subcutaneous fatty layer (SC), mammary layer (M), and retromammary fatty layer (RM). The mammary layer consists of lobules of stromal fat together with bands of tan collagenous connective tissue. The ducts and lobules (blue) are found mostly in the tan collagenous stroma, and not in the fat. Hematoxylin stain.
