5. HUMAN ATYPICAL LOBULE, TYPE A (ALA)

LEGEND

Slide 5. This is a subgross photo from a slice of human breast. There is a hyperplastic lesion measuring about 1 mm in greatest dimension (ALA). The patient is postmenopausal, and the breast tissue is relatively atrophic. Note the striking similarity of the ALA (atypical lobule, type A) to the HANs illustrated in slides 3 and 4. ALAs often contain atypical (dysplastic) epithelium and are hypothesized to be the common preneoplastic lesions of the human breast, linking normal terminal ductal lobular units (TDLU) to ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). ALA is a pathological TDLU, and a homolog and analog of HAN. Hematoxylin stain.
