43. APOCRINE CYSTIC METAPLASIA

Slide 43. This is a photograph of subgross image of a TDLU completely replaced by apocrine cystic metaplasia (APO cyst). The lesion measures 3mm in greatest dimension. There are minute papillary projections into the lumens. The fluid secretions in the lumens are very important to the mammographer. The granules in the secretions are radiopaque and dense enough to settle to the bottom of the cysts according to the patient’s position, standing or supine. These are the mobile "tea cups" of the x-ray mammographer. The radiographic appearance is highly diagnostic of benign cysts. Note the background ducts and lobules. Hematoxylin stain.
