42. HISTOLOGY OF ALB (ATYPICAL LOBULAR HYPERPLASIA)

LEGEND

Slide 42. Histology reveals the likely preneoplastic lesion for LCIS. Note acini containing small numbers of cells resembling those of LCIS. The acini in this instance are not distended with cells, and have lumens. This appearance is traditionally called "atypical lobular hyperplasia". We have also called these lesions "atypical lobules, type B" or ALB, in order to distinguish them from the much commoner ALA. Only a few convincing ALB are found in our preparations. Subgrossly, they are not easily distinguishable from LCIS, and histological confirmation is always required. Low magnification. Hematoxylin and eosin stain.
