34. SUBGROSS OF DCIS

Slide 34. This is a higher magnification of similar ducts containing DCIS, comedo pattern. Note viable blue layer of cells at the periphery. The central core of dead DCIS cells is orange. This material is sufficiently calcified to be visible as "castings" on x-ray mammograms, an appearance which is highly diagnostic. The ducts are approximately 2 mm in diameter in this preparation. Hematoxylin stain.
