3. MOUSE MAMMARY NODULIGENESIS

LEGEND

Slide 3. Portions of whole mounts stained with hematoxylin illustrate the natural history of the mammary gland of the MTV+, RIII mouse. Upper left is the virgin animal with a duct system and end buds, but no alveoli. Upper middle is a virgin mouse, 2 months of age; alveoli are observed, but no lobules. Upper right is prelactating gland; lobulo-alveolar development is observed. Lower right is a fully developed lactating gland. Lower left is a gland containing four hyperplastic alveolar nodules (HAN). The nodules arise in both the virgin and the breeding animals.
