16. SUBGROSS OF
HUMAN BREAST
LEGEND
Slide 16. This slice reveals a solid area of "dysplastic tissue" (delineated by arrows). Areas like this are often rich sources of focal lesions of the TDLU, including the smallest and earliest foci of ductal and lobular carcinoma-in-situ. Mammographers recognize this "dysplastic tissue" by its homogeneous, structureless "ground glass" appearance on x-ray films. The hemorrhage (H) is a recent excisional biopsy site. Infiltrating duct carcinoma was present and these slices are from a radical mastectomy of the Halsted type. Hematoxylin stain.
