29, 30, 36. DUCTAL CARCINOMA-IN-SITU, MICROPAPILLARY (CRIBRIFORM) TYPE

LEGEND

Slide 29, 30, 36. The image on the left is of an atypical lobule, type A (ALA), grade 5, or DCIS. The lesion is isolated within the slice, measures about 3 mm in diameter, does not involve the adjacent duct, and is solidly blue because the acini are distended with cells. The central image shows the corresponding histology of a cross section of an acinus filled with ductal carcinoma of the micropapillary (cribriform) type. The image to the right is a terminal duct cut in longitudinal section showing papillary formations of epithelial cells. There are irregularly shaped and angular concretions between the epithelial cells. Concretions of this appearance are often sufficiently calcified to be seen on xray mammograms as "crushed rock" or "sand". Hematoxylin stain.
