The Wnt 1 pathway is important in that wnt 1 was the first oncogene identified as the gene (int-1) activated by insertion of the Mouse Mammary Tumor Virus. It was not identified in human tumors and thought to be unimportant. However, careful examimation of the pathway reveals numerous genes that are involved in human and murine neoplasms.
