The lactating mouse is prepared by removing the pups overnight and/or injecting her with 0.1cc of oxytocin. She is capture by gripping the tail between the last two fingers and grasping the scruff of her neck between the thumb and forefinger.
The milking apparatus is made up, in this example, of the attachment end of a 18 guage needle. The needle is attached to a plastic tube that is attached to a syringe. The mouse nipple is gently wiped with a cotton-tipped stick wet with saline. It will become erect. The cup is then applied to the nipple and VERY GENTLE pressure is applied with the syringe. For best results, apply a gentle repeated pumping action.
