This seminar relates our experience with the mammary gland in transgenic and/or knock out mice. It is a useful guide for the those who are either targeting the mammary gland or have unexpected alterations in the mammary gland. Our experience is based on the examination of gross and/or microscopic samples from over 5000 genetically manipulated animals and controls at the Transgenic Histopathology Laboratory of the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine. Our archives contains mammary gland samples from over 2000 mice with over 75 transgenes and/or knock outs including combinations sent to us by 137 investigators from 37 different laboratories. This collection permits an unique comparative study of the biology of the transgenic mammary glands from a number of different sources.
