37, 38, 39, 75, 16. INFILTRATING DUCT CARCINOMA

LEGEND

Slide 37 38, 39, 75, and 16. The left upper image is a subgross slice of breast revealing a 2x3 cm infiltrating duct carcinoma (INFCA) arising in the hypotrophic parenchma of a fatty breast. Viable cancer tissue is blue and fibrous tissue is yellow. The left middle image shows the corresponding histology at low power, and the right middle at higher power. Note the normal ducts (one labeled D) surrounded by infiltrating cancer cells. The right upper image is of a tiny INFCA measuring 5 mm in diameter. Infiltrating cancer cells cause fuzziness at the edge of the lesion. The lower left image is of a mastectomy specimen. Note the darkly hemorrhagic biopsy site. Also observe the dense tissue beneath the biopsy site. This is fibrocystic disease, recognized by the x-ray mammographer as "dysplastic" by virtue of the "ground glass" appearance on radiograms. Hematoxylin stain.
